Preparing for Your First Train Ride

Whether you're a railroad enthusiast or a family looking for a unique Colorado adventure, your first ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad promises to be unforgettable. Here's everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.

Choosing Your Experience

The Georgetown Loop offers several different experiences throughout the year:

Standard Train Ride: Our classic 90-minute round trip takes you through the spectacular Colorado mountain scenery, including the iconic Devil's Gate High Bridge crossing.

Train + Mine Tour: Combine your train ride with a guided tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine for the complete Georgetown experience. This combination is especially popular with history buffs and families with older children.

Special Events: Throughout the year, we offer themed rides including Santa's North Pole Adventure in winter, Murder Mystery trains, and special photography excursions.

What to Wear

Colorado mountain weather can change quickly, even in summer. We recommend:

  • Layers: Temperatures can vary significantly between the stations and the high bridge
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Especially important if you're adding the mine tour
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: The Colorado sun is intense at 9,000+ feet elevation
  • A light jacket: Even summer evenings can be cool in the mountains

What to Bring

  • Camera or phone for photos
  • Snacks and water (concessions are available at both stations)
  • Cash for the gift shop
  • Sense of adventure!

Arrival and Parking

We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. This gives you time to:

  • Park and locate your departure station
  • Visit the restroom facilities
  • Browse the gift shop
  • Find comfortable seating on the train

Parking is free at both Devil's Gate and Silver Plume stations. If you're doing the mine tour, make sure you're departing from the Silver Plume station.

During Your Ride

Our open-air cars offer the best views and photo opportunities, though enclosed coaches are available for those who prefer climate control. Narration throughout the trip shares the fascinating history of the region.

The highlight of every journey is crossing the Devil's Gate High Bridge. Make sure your camera is ready - this is a moment you'll want to capture!

Tips for Families

  • Children under 3 ride free on a parent's lap
  • Our trains are stroller-friendly
  • The mine tour is best suited for children 6 and older
  • Restrooms are available at both stations and on some train cars
