Meet Our Historic Locomotives
At the heart of every Georgetown Loop Railroad journey are our magnificent locomotives. Each engine in our fleet has its own story to tell, representing different eras of American railroading. Let us introduce you to the stars of the show.
Steam Locomotive #111
Our pride and joy, Locomotive #111, is an authentic 1920s-era steam engine that brings the golden age of railroading to life. Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, this 2-8-0 Consolidation type engine represents the workhorses that once powered America's industrial expansion.
When #111 fires up, you're experiencing railroading exactly as it was over a century ago. The whistle's haunting call echoing through the canyon, the rhythmic chuff of the pistons, the smell of coal smoke - it's a sensory journey back in time.
Steam Locomotive #14
Locomotive #14 is another Baldwin product, a slightly smaller engine that's perfectly suited to our mountain grades. Originally built for industrial service, this locomotive has been meticulously restored to operating condition.
#14 often serves as our backup steam locomotive and stars in special photography excursion events, where railroad enthusiasts can capture images of classic steam railroading against the stunning Colorado backdrop.
Diesel Locomotives
While steam is the star attraction, our diesel locomotives play an essential supporting role. These engines handle many of our regular service trains, especially during high-traffic periods when we need to run multiple trains simultaneously.
Our diesels are themselves historic - most date from the 1950s and 1960s, representing the transition era when diesels gradually replaced steam on American railroads. Their colorful paint schemes and distinctive horns add variety to the Georgetown Loop experience.
Behind the Scenes
Keeping these historic machines running requires tremendous skill and dedication. Our mechanical team includes some of the few remaining experts in steam locomotive maintenance - a craft that's becoming increasingly rare in the modern world.
Each operating day begins hours before the first passengers arrive. The steam locomotives require careful preparation: building the fire, building up steam pressure, checking all mechanical systems, and ensuring everything is in perfect working order.
Experience the Power
There's nothing quite like standing trackside as a steam locomotive thunders past, or feeling the train surge forward as tons of steel and fire begin their climb up the mountain. Our locomotives aren't museum pieces - they're living, breathing machines that continue to inspire wonder in visitors of all ages.
Whether you're a dedicated railfan who can identify wheel arrangements at a glance, or a first-time visitor simply looking for a unique experience, our locomotives are ready to take you on an unforgettable journey.
